David Njoku released a statement on Instagram yesterday ahead of free agency. It seems the nine-year veteran is preparing for a new chapter elsewhere. Njoku has been one of the most reliable pass catchers in Browns history. But with the emergence of rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. and Njoku now turning 30, Cleveland may no longer have a place for him on the roster.
The Steelers will gladly see the 2023 Pro-Bowl tight end leave the division. Njoku’s departure would further thin an already underwhelming Browns offense. Cleveland struggled to generate production through the air in 2025. Losing one of its few proven weapons would only make life more difficult for whoever ends up under center in 2026.
Jerry Jeudy led Browns wide receivers with just 602 receiving yards, while Fannin led the entire team with 731 yards. For all the criticism Pittsburgh received about its lack of receiving threats in 2025, Cleveland’s situation was arguably worse. And with Njoku heading out the door, it doesn’t seem that the Browns will be getting better heading into the 2026 season.
Njoku is expected to be one of the top tight ends available in free agency, alongside names like Kyle Pitts and Dallas Goedert. While he may profile more as a No. 2 tight end at this stage of his career, he remains a dependable pass catcher and red-zone threat.
