The Steelers have an opportunity to take a shot at their next quarterback in Pittsburgh this April.

In his latest mock draft on ESPN, Field Yates announced Ty Simpson as his pick to the Steelers. An unsurprising move, the Steelers have been connected to any and all potential first-round picks at quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

It’s still early in the draft process, but some analysts believe Simpson could be selected before the Steelers pick at No. 21. Outside of Mendoza and Simpson there aren’t any realistic first-round quarterback prospects in this draft. That lack of talent may push Simpson higher than he may deserve to go.

Simpson started off the year strong but struggled towards the end of the season. It will be interesting to see how scouts and national media perceive his draft stock as the off-season continues. That uncertainty looms even larger for Pittsburgh, who still doesn’t have a long-term plan at quarterback.

Despite the Steelers’ need at quarterback, the weakness of this year’s QB class could push them toward another position. The wide receiver group is widely viewed as one of the strongest in the draft, which could create a difficult decision if a top receiver and quarterback are both available at No. 21. Pittsburgh’s front office may have to choose between positional value and long-term need.

What would you like the Steelers to do in the first round? Would Simpson be a good pick or would you rather them pick up another position of need?
