Mike Tomlin Could Be the Steelers’ Most Valuable Hidden Asset

Mike Tomlin’s departure from the Steelers was surprising, but could Pittsburgh ultimately capitalize on it?
Despite stepping away from the team, the Steelers still retain Tomlin’s contractual rights through the 2026 season, with an option for 2027. Analysts are already speculatingabout where Tomlin could coach next, but for now, he appears content taking time away from the game.
What could this mean in 2027?
At this point, the full details of Tomlin’s contract have not been made public, nor is it clear whether he intends to return to coaching. However, if Tomlin does decide to come back, it is possible the Steelers could receive compensation if another team wants to hire him while he remains under contract.
Trading a coachis rare but it isn’t unprecedented. The Raiders traded Jon Gruden to the Buccaneers for two first-round picks, and more recently, the Saints sent Sean Payton to the Broncos in exchange for a first-round pick, along with a second- and third-round pick swap. Given Tomlin’s reputation league-wide it is reasonable to believe he could fetch similar compensation if not more.
However, Tomlin’s contract language has not been publicly disclosed, and there remains a possibility the Steelers may not retain his coaching rights following his retirement. If Pittsburgh is indeed headed toward a rebuild, acquiring high-end draft capital could accelerate the process and help them return to contender status more quickly.
